Our Kitchen Tour + Remodeling Plans

As you may know, we're knee-deep in many projects over here at Casa Atwood; the major of these being remodeling our kitchen. I realized the other day that I hadn't yet posted pictures of our current kitchen, and decided a post about the thorn in my flesh place where I cook would probably be fun before we completely gut the thing this weekend.

So, come on in and make yourself right at home. Here's the grand tour of where it all goes down, complete with some photoshop details of what we plan to do!

Our kitchen opens up into our dining room, so when you're standing in the D.R., this is the view of the kitchen . . .

Right now, we have 28-inch cabinets with a 7.5 inch soffit running along the top. Our plans are to remove the soffit so that we can install our 30-inch cabinets, leaving some open and airy space at the top of the cabinets . . . I have some fun decorating ideas planned for that space!

We also have some harsh fluorescent lighting going on in there, so our plans are to remove that and install some nice can lights (I'm hoping for LED!).

Once you enter the kitchen, this is the view. Our stove is off the left, and then next to the fridge, there's a tiny entrance to go into the basement or garage.

To say this fridge is a little massive for our small kitchen is an understatement, but hey, we like food! Our plans are to move the fridge to the wall where that arrow is, install a surrounding pantry to close it in, and move the dishwasher to the other side of the sink. This will open up our kitchen and take it from circley-shaped to more of a galley kitchen.

If you're coming into the kitchen via the garage, this is the view.

We plan to get rid of that "L-Shaped" layout by extending our new cabinets all the way into the Dining Room until they reach the sliding glass doors. This way, it'll seem more like an eat-in kitchen instead of a larger dining room with a teeny tiny closed-in kitchen.

And this is the other wall in the kitchen where the stove is.

That white cabinet has served as our makeshift pantry, so we plan to remove that and extend the upper and lower new cabinets all the way to the end of that wall. On the other side of the stove, there's also room for more new cabinets on the top and bottom, so I'll be gaining lots of counter space on that side of the kitchen.

We also plan to remove the 12x12 white/gray tile and replace it with some alternating 6x6 mocha/hazelnut tiles in order to make the dining room and kitchen appear larger.

And of course we plan to replace the countertops as well . . .we just haven't plunged in and made that whopping purchase yet!

Although we won't actually be gaining any square footage in the kitchen, I'm super excited about opening things up so that the layout flows much better. And, although I'm loosing two lazy susan's which are great space savers, I'm hoping that the extra 2-inches in the cabinets and the extra cabinets along the wall with the stove will give me more space.

So, there you have it! That's our kitchen and kitchen remodeling plans in a nutshell. Hopefully this gives you a better idea of what Nathan and my dad have ahead of them. Bless their hearts.
