Camping Recap and Photos

Does visiting three state parks in three days, hiking over 12+ miles, gazing at 50+ waterfalls, driving through a stream, seeing a snake, snagging free firewood and eating like a king sound like fun to you???

If so, then you'd love to go camping with us!! :)

That's basically what our trip summed up to be this weekend, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the best camping trip.  Ever.  Granted, I've only been camping two times before this, but it rocked!

If you ever get the chance to visit Upstate New York, please promise me you'll visit Ithaca.  It's a must, and it's now been added to The Atwood Family Favorite of places to go.

I'll shush now and let you see some pictures . . .

Before I get to the good stuff, I do have to share that Yours Truly was the Packing Queen for this trip.  Yours Truly also managed to pack the only pair of shorts Hubby has had since he was 18.  Needless to say, they didn't fit him and our first stop before camping was one of our favorite spots . . .

After Nathan found some more comfortable attire, we hit the park!

We camped out in Robert Treman State Park.  These are a few of the sites there . . .

We built a fire with free firewood.  It was totally a God thing.  We spotted a man right outside the park with a sign that read "FREE" on a big pile of wood.  It was perfect for our weekend!

That's my man building our fire so we can cook.  :)  Those old tight shorts did come in handy after all . . . here he is ripping them to shreds, and he's about to soak them in gas and wrap them around our free firewood.  He's so smart!

We woke up at 5 AM to get some shots of waterfalls.  *yawn*  But, it was so worth it!  Nathan says this time is called the "Magic Hour" in photography world.  Now I see why . . .

Upon arriving, we also discovered this:

Yes, that's a stream.  And I'm driving in it!  We had to cross this to get to our campsite.

On Saturday, we went to Buttermilk State Park.  This was by far my favorite of all the parks we visited this weekend.

We snagged some "magic hour" photos of the major fall . . .

And then went back later in the day to hike the rest of the park . . .

Saturday night, we visited the prestigious Cornell University.  It sits right atop Ithaca (literally), and is probably the most beautiful campus I've ever visited.  These pictures do not do it justice.

On Sunday, we had church in the woods after our big breakfast.  Then, we headed to Taughannock State Park on our way out of town.

This waterfall is over 200 feet tall!

Of course it wouldn't be an Atwood vacation if I didn't mention the food.  I joked with Nathan that we lived like paupers but ate like kings this weekend.

Friday night we had steak, shrimp and corn . . .

Saturday afternoon hubby grilled out burgers and dogs . . .

Saturday night we ate out at a local Mexican restaurant called Garcia's. We really can't go one week without eating Mexican.  We've tried.  It's not pretty.  Trust me.

And Sunday morning we had bacon, eggs and grilled toast . . .

Oh, and then on Sunday afternoon, we stopped at this sweet little country restaurant on the way outta' town called the Woodland Roadhouse.  Word on the street is the owners are from North Carolina.  I'm guessing that's why the food was so delicious.  Those southern folk know how to throw it down!  Nathan had the BBQ and I had chicken.  It was yummy!

  1. What a fun weekend! We have a neighbor who goes to Cornell -- but have never been there ourselves. We'll have to stop there some day -- those parks look amazing!

  2. Wow! The pictures were great- what beautiful scenery!. I can't believe how yummy the food looked - camping is crackers and cheese, not bacon and eggs. Glad you enjoyed - thanks for the pictures and update!
